Wulfrun Walkers

Who are we ?

We are a friendly local independent walking club founded in 1947, based in Wolverhampton, West Midlands. We have around 90 members coming mostly from within a fifteen mile radius of the city, the age range of our club is mainly 50+ but we do have some younger members.

Our club takes its name after Lady Wulfruna, a Saxon nobility who lived over a thousand years ago in the Kingdom of Mercia, Saxon England then was a federation of seven kingdoms, the three dominant ones, Wessex, Mercia and Northumbria were in a constant state of hostility. She is believed to be the granddaughter of Ethelred I and in 985AD, King Ethelred II (brother to Lady Wulfruna) granted her ten hides of land at Heantune, which later became known as Wolverhampton.

Lady Wulfruna also founded St. Peter's Church in 994AD, the pillar in the church yard is the last remaining piece of the 8th century Saxon Cross which stood before the church was established.

Our activities

We do not have a central meeting point for our walks, members make their own way to the starting place using their own transport. The club encourages informal car sharing arrangements as very often parking is limited at our meeting places and more importantly it decreases our carbon footprint. We are ideally situated in Wolverhampton to access areas such as Shropshire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire, the Cotswolds, Cheshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire, Warwickshire and the Welsh borders and this you will see, is reflected in our programme of walks.

Members can enjoy a programme of short (5-6 miles) and longer walks (8-10 miles) every Sunday, offering plenty of choice for all abilities throughout the year. In addition to our weekly walks programme, we arrange walking holidays for club members at home and abroad as well as meals out, occasional tours and visits.

Members are kept up to date with a quarterly newsletter together with regular e-mails and a live programme of walks on this site.

If you would like any further information or wish to discuss any issues that you feel would affect your membership, you can find names and numbers on the Contact page.
